Sacred Heart Church
Lebanon, New Hampshire
Sacred Heart Church of Lebanon, New Hampshire commissioned Saucier+Flynn, Ltd. to enhance the church grounds and improve the entrance procession from the street. While the church’s position offered myriad design opportunities, it also posed site access and drainage challenges. The existing entrance steps had deteriorated to a point where safety of parishioners was a concern. In addition, the proportions of the walk and steps related poorly to the architecture and made the ascent awkward, especially during ceremonial processions.
The new steps serve as a major focal point and the creation of a new plaza enables the building to rest comfortably atop the knoll. An ADA accessible path ties in with the plaza allowing handicap patrons a similar entry experience and access to the plaza. The addition of period lighting, a custom designed granite bench, and plantings create an attractive and dignified foreground for the church. It has become a dynamic and popular gathering area after mass and other church functions.
